#REF! Error in Excel

#REF! means the formula points to a cell, range, or sheet that no longer exists — usually after delete, cut, or sheet removal.

How #REF! is created

Recovery

  1. Ctrl+Z immediately if the delete just happened
  2. Ctrl+F for #REF! across the workbook
  3. Formulas → Name Manager — fix or delete broken names
  4. Rewrite with Table structured references when possible
  5. Data → Edit Links for external workbooks
Broken: =VLOOKUP(A2,Sheet2!#REF!,2,FALSE)
Fixed:  =VLOOKUP(A2,Sheet2!A:B,2,FALSE)
